These rugged mats are of 1/2" thick polyethylene so they are virtually indestructible. They withstand vehicles weighing up to 120 tons, bend but do not break, and feature a Limited Lifetime Warranty. The mats come drilled in each corner with the option of having two hand holes on each side of the mat for easier handling.
AlturnaMATS and VersaMATS are environmentally friendly mats as they are made from highly recyclable HDPE material.

The only difference is the tread pattern where AlturnaMAT® uses a Diamond Cleat pattern and VersaMat uses a lower profile and less aggressive flat oblong pattern. Composite ground protection matting is designed to protect and stabilize desirable surfaces from damage or degradation due to overuse. Using Ground protection mats prevents damage caused by heavy use.
Transporting lawn protection mats efficiently and securely can be difficult without the right equipment. Although the AlturnaMAT system gives good traction for vehicles and pedestrians, they can slide over each other with relative ease. This is good for stacking and handling the product but not so good for keeping it secure when being transported.
The Mat-Pak system offers a forklift-friendly method of transporting and storing the mats safely. It has been designed to fit into the bed of a pick-up and has forklift lifting points along each side so it is easy to store, load, and unload.
The mats are secured with ratchet straps to a metal frame, allowing the mats to be moved onto shelving and vehicles securely.

AlturnaMATS and VersaMATS offer superior strength, durability, and protection compared to plywood and other mats. The benefits of using these composite mats over plywood are formidable. Benefits such as being able to reuse them over and over again and a lifetime warranty to back up that use. Extreme load capacity, AlturnaMATS, and VersaMATS are designed to disperse up to 120 tons. These mats are recyclable, made from 100 percent recycled plastics, and UV stable so they wont break down over time. 'Alturna' and 'Versa' mats will withstand extreme temperatures, and wont rot or deteriorate. 'Alturna' and 'Versa' mats can be connected and interlocked indefinitely. AlturnaMATS has the most aggressive tread on the market, allowing for maximum equipment traction. Plywood has disadvantages not associated with using composite mats and shares none of the benefits listed below.
Although from a performance specification, AlturnaMATS and VersaMATS are identical, however, they do suit different applications; VersaMATS is better suited to use in areas with higher pedestrian traffic as it has a less aggressive tread pattern that is far easier to walk on and offers superior traction for shoes. It is also suited to maneuvering smaller items such as wheelbarrows or carts but can still be used with heavy equipment if required.
AlturnaMATS are better suited to use in heavy construction areas due to an aggressive tread pattern, offering superior traction to construction vehicles, especially in muddy or wet conditions. It is suited to construction, drilling, tree care, and landscaping applications. AlturnaMATS has the most aggressive tread pattern available on the market.
The application of your ground mat will determine if you need an AlturnaMATS or VersaMATS. Concrete, asphalt, and pavers should use a mat with one side smooth side down. You can also use the smooth side up for making turns with track machines. Cemeteries and irrigation companies may use smooth one side also by putting the smooth side up to catch the dirt when digging.
Mats with one smooth side are desirable when its necessary to cover hard non-forgiving surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, and pavers. Using treaded mats on warm or hot asphalt will leave tread imprints in the asphalt hence using smooth-sided mats on asphalt. When making turns with wheeled or track equipment it is more desirable to use a mat with one smooth side facing up. When piling soils or aggregate on top of mats it is very advantageous to use smooth-sided mats which make removal much easier.

Handi-Hook - used to make it easier to maneuver the mats when on the ground. E-Z Links and Turn-a-Links - used to connect mats together. Turn-A-Rack - Steel storage and transport rack system. The black AlturnaMATS is the original and first color produced by AlturnaMATS. Black is the most cost-effective mat. White was later introduced to prevent grass from potentially "browning" over extended periods of usage with the mats. The Clear translucent mat now supersedes white as this further reduces heat damage to the ground below. White mats are still available for customers who still prefer to support their existing white inventory. White and Clear mats are offered at the same price points and are both made using UV-stabilized virgin HDPE. Below are manufacturer test results comparing heat performance between black and white AlturnaMATS. Clear (Translucent) mats would have similar or improved characteristics to white mats.)Mat size depends entirely on the type of traffic on the mat. Where Are They Used?
Ground protection mats are often used on construction sites to protect the ground or floor from damage caused by heavy machinery as well as the work being done.
Contractors and construction workers who have to cross or drive over manicured lawn areas to get to their worksites are the kind of people who primarily use primary use ground protection mats.
For example, if a homeowner were to hire a contractor to build a guest house in their backyard, the contractor would most likely have to drive trucks and forklifts into the backyard. Ground damage is almost inevitable in this case as the turf is subjected to the pressure of foot traffic and machinery. However, ground mats could be used to create a firm surface to walk and drive building machinery over. This way, a homes green grass doesnt get torn up and ruined.
In Areas Requiring Additional Traction
In cases where ground protection mats are used to protect the ground from tires ripping up the dirt and plants in an area, they also add an extra bit of traction.
Since tires need traction to move and not just spin in place, making sure your wheels have enough grip is necessary. Grass and dirt dont always provide the sort of traction necessary for these sorts of machines because they arent designed to be used on such surfaces.
Instead, ground mats simulate the sort of ground a forklift of a work truck might have been built to drive on. This allows the forklifts to move with more ease and, in turn, tear up less of the ground. Since the mats used in these situations tend to provide a surface for large machines to roll over, they tend to be large in size. It wouldnt be uncommon to see a single mat being carried by two construction workers because its too big and bulky to be carried by one person.
