Chinese energy storage companies are making waves in global markets, securing several high-profile contracts across Europe, South Africa, and Southeast Asia. Among them, Envision Energy has announced its acquisition of South Africa's largest energy storage order, making it the first energy storage system integrator in the country to achieve a GWh-scale project.

On December 6, Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd. revealed its agreement with the Philippine-listed Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC) to deliver 1.5 GWh of energy storage systems. This represents the largest energy storage order in Southeast Asia to date. Under the agreement, CREC will procure Sungrow's energy storage systems and receive engineering and construction design support.

Earlier, Sungrow also secured the largest energy storage deal in Europe. The company signed a partnership with UK-based Fidra Energy for a 4.4 GWh energy storage project. Sungrow will supply systems to Fidra's flagship independent storage plants, Thorpe Marsh (3.3 GWh) and West Burton C (1.1 GWh). Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, and upon completion, the project will supply power to 1.1 million UK households, according to Sungrow.

Another major milestone came from Huawei, which inked a deal with the Philippines' Terra Solar Philippines Inc. (TSPI) for a 4.5 GWh battery energy storage system as part of the MTerra Solar Project. With an investment exceeding PHP 200 billion (approximately RMB 25 billion), this initiative is regarded as the world's largest solar-plus-storage project, featuring 3.5 GW of solar capacity paired with 4.5 GWh of energy storage.

Meanwhile, ChuNeng New Energy entered a strategic partnership with Italy's Cestari Group in Wuhan, China. The agreement outlines plans to establish a 1.5 GWh energy storage system project in Italy using ChuNeng's proprietary CORNEX M5 20-foot, 5 MWh prefabricated battery containers. The collaboration aims to achieve a total of 30 GWh in energy storage capacity within three to five years.

REPT BATTERO Energy also announced a strategic cooperation agreement with South Korea’s JUNGWOO Group Co., Ltd., signed in Shanghai. The agreement involves the supply of at least 5 GWh of energy storage system products and 2 GWh of energy storage battery cells.

As competition intensifies in China's domestic market, many energy storage companies are turning their attention overseas. However, industry insiders have raised concerns about the risks associated with international expansion. While foreign markets offer opportunities to mitigate domestic price competition, challenges such as long-term operational and maintenance costs—often spanning 20 years—present significant uncertainties.
