Hex dome nuts or acorn nuts got their names due to the dome-shaped projection on one side of the nut. This is mostly used to protect objects close to the ends of screws from scratches and structural injuries. It also reduces the effects of physical mishaps on human skin if it somehow forcefully hits the fasteners. The external threads of the screws inserted into these nuts are securely enclosed within the dome. In addition to the protection it offers, these nuts provide the structure an aesthetically pleasing look.

At last, a use for Dome nuts!

But tonight I'm needing to cut away a section of thread on some short bolts, down to the minor diameter, and it occurs to me the VERY THING would be a dome nut with a centre hole drilled in the centre of the dome.

Then I could chuck on the hex, support the nut on the tail centre, and Bob's your uncle....

Of course, being as how I hold them in such low esteem, I don't have more than a smattering in the entire shop, and they all hide when they see me coming

Sigh././
so I'll have to try and chase up a nut that's the same AF as the bolt head, so I can temporarily grip on two hexes, while I put a tiny centre hole in each bolt .....

But I might just equip myself with a series of pre-centered nuts, one each size I commonly use -

Come to think of it, would also be handy for shortening bolts. I think I'd be happy to use my second-best 3 jaw on the hex, pre-chamfer, then run a parting tool in with tail centre support via the dome nut, until I sensed it was not prudent to proceed further ...

then snap off the tail and touch on a linisher to lose the tit

I don't quite know why, but I've always held these in low regard, along with split pins, long-centre chain drives, cast bevel gears, etc etcBut tonight I'm needing to cut away a section of thread on some short bolts, down to the minor diameter, and it occurs to me the VERY THING would be a dome nut with a centre hole drilled in the centre of the dome. Then I could chuck on the hex, support the nut on the tail centre, and Bob's your uncle....Of course, being as how I hold them in such low esteem, I don't have more than a smattering in the entire shop, and they all hide when they see me comingSigh././so I'll have to try and chase up a nut that's the same AF as the bolt head, so I can temporarily grip on two hexes, while I put a tiny centre hole in each bolt .....But I might just equip myself with a series of pre-centered nuts, one each size I commonly use -Come to think of it, would also be handy for shortening bolts.
