Inspired by the serenity of its namesake on the Australian east coast, Long Beach offers a relaxed, coastal feel reminiscent of untouched beaches. Beautifully soft, the subtle chenille yarn is woven, and yarn dyed in natural colourways, ideal for minimal, contemporary living spaces.

When you know you want a certain look for your home, its often about starting fresh and pinpointing your personal style. That was the case for a Northville family who worked with Cloth & Kind, an Ann Arbor-based interior design firm owned by Krista Nye Nicholas and Tami Ramsay.

Our clients didnt bring a whole lot with them. They wanted a warm, inviting, and cozy feeling, says Nicholas, whose design studio is 11 years old and includes a 5-year-old showroom of highly curated, artisanal textile and wallcovering lines from around the world.

They didnt want what everyone had, which was neutrals and grays and tone-on-tone. They wanted more color and unique applications, Nicholas says. The couple also knew that when youre building a dream home, its a good time to figure out your design aesthetic.

The clients house was originally intended for the homes builder, but he decided to sell it to the Northville family. With two daughters, the new homeowners wanted more family space and a theater, a game room, and a backyard with options for entertaining.

Nicholas and the team, including Guidobono Building Co. of Northville, made many interior architectural changes, most of which involved removing existing details like half-walls, tray ceilings, and interior columns.

The kitchen, for example, was open to the family room, but it was visually separated by curved half-walls and curved ceiling details. A new ceiling treatment features the addition of hand-hewn wood beams, and the charming banquettes built-in bench makes use of the tall windows as frames for custom upholstered backrests. Its one of the familys most popular places to lounge and hang out, Nicholas says.

The designer was glad the clients were game for the kitchens wood upper cabinets and their rough-sawn finish. They hadnt seen anything like that, Nicholas says. The island has the same wood finish, while a custom hood and wall tile with a beautiful diamond-relief pattern make the gathering spot special. Its my favorite kitchen of all the kitchens weve done, Nicholas says.

A deep tray ceiling was reworked in the primary bedroom to include pecky cypress, finished with a soft wash to mellow the tone while still allowing its warmth to come through.

Cool tones add drama in the office, which is bathed in deep gray-blues. We knew that our clients werent afraid of dark colors, Nicholas explains. Guidobono, who was wonderful to work with, helped source some great custom elements that we came up with, like the offices live-edge floating desk.

The firms signature design philosophy which typically evokes age, charm, tradition, whimsy, warmth, detail, and worldliness is evident throughout the home.

Nicholas passion and global aesthetic likely stem from the time she lived in India with her family when she was in third grade, while Ramsays passion comes from her days traveling and living in Argentina. Spending time in India is where my love of color, pattern, and patina come from, Nicholas says. We like things that arent so new and precious. The two designers source from the world over, including Europe, Africa, and India. When they travel, they intentionally look for vintage art and items with patina.

Tami and I are also mad-passionate for details, Nicholas asserts. She notes that an unexpected detail in the back powder room is the trim, painted in a cheerful turquoise hue. Vintage art, a customized mirror, and Katie Leede & Co. wallpaper add to the appeal.

In the primary suite, the drapery (Seema Krishs Glitterati linen) has a gold glimmer to it. Its quietly elegant, Nicholas says. She prefers to have a seating area in a primary suite and was excited that these clients truly use it. They sit, read, or talk, and get away from the kids, she says. A custom-designed rug overlay featuring greens, blues, and ochers was inspired by an antique Oushak rug. Bunny Williams Pheasant lamps are perennial favorites of ours because of the unique sancai (tri-colored) glaze process, says the designer.

In the primary bath, the design team selected shimmery gold tile (hand-painted, terracotta), while sheer drapery tiebacks were picked up in Morocco during Nicholas and Ramsays travels. Other mixed-in international pieces include a large antique Kuba cloth from Africa that hangs in the lower level.

The art of the mix is apparent throughout the home. Consider the second powder room, where Phillip Jeffries wallpaper, a marble Maitland- Smith mirror, and an off-center sink create a distinct look. I fell in love with the mirror at High Point Market (North Carolina), Nicholas says.

It was never put into production; luckily I was able to score the sample, because I had designed the whole bathroom around it! The live-edge counter is made by the same outfit that crafted the office desk. In the family room, a multi- bubble-motif light fixture adds eclectic appeal. She likes the idea of something dressy and he wanted casual, so the light fixture is her and the beams are him.

In the end, the family was thrilled to make a fresh start in the design department. They had a melting pot of things that he had, and she had, but they had never really articulated their style together as a family, Nicholas says. Now their home reflects not only their newfound passion for personal style and beauty, but it accommodates all their needs as a busy, fun-loving family.

These Are the 10 Fall Decor Trends You Need to Know

As the leaves on the trees outside get ready to turn, we&#;re turning over a new leaf here at Chairish, too; taking stock of the colors, styles, and shapes that we&#;re feeling totally swoon-y for this fall. To get the ball rolling, our fabulous co-founder Anna Brockway is sharing the ten fall decor trends she&#;s most looking forward to working. Ready to FALL in love?

1. Return to Traditional

Traditional furniture is having a moment&#;again. Anna shares: &#;We&#;ve been seeing a big return to traditional. This fall decor trend highlights softer palettes and neoclassical accents.&#; Whether your vice is a French bergère or a Wedgwood teacup, this trend feels especially fresh in more idiosyncratic color-ways like mint and marigold.

2. Flora and Fauna

A bevy of prints hailing the botanical kingdom have us feeling keen for green this fall. &#;Chairish shoppers love to take a walk on the wild side, and we&#;re seeing it in all things botanical and uninhibited,&#; says Anna. For those with a green thumb, big-palmed plants like monstara and philodendron selloum are trending, while those looking for less demanding ways to integrate some green can turn to fantastical floral prints.

3. Sculptural & Whimsical Tables

On the table this fall: whimsical tables with a sculptural bent. &#;Whether it&#;s plaster, wicker or glass, our shoppers are loving whimsical tables for their sophisticated wit,&#; says Anna. Choose a brass hoofed table from a maker like La Barge for a dose of wit and elegance, or spring for a totally tongue-in-cheek piece like the John Dickinson table to usher in vibes of pure whimsy.

4. Golden Yellow

Radiant and decidedly cozy, golden yellow is lighting up our life this fall. Anna notes, &#;We&#;re looking at fall through gold-colored glasses! This cheery and bright hue has caught our eye, and we don&#;t see this sunny trend going anywhere anytime soon.&#; We&#;re especially loving golden yellow for possessing all of the sophistication and lux of traditional gold, without any of the pretentiousness. Whether you go big with a sofa or keep it minimal with a vase, this fall decor trend will lift your spirits and brighten up any room like a little ray of sunshine.

5. Painted Case Goods

A natural finish is always a classic, but this fall, we&#;re looking to case goods painted in deep, saturated hues to bring a little extra vava voom to a room. Anna shares, &#;From modern to traditional, Swedish Gustavian to Chinoiserie, we&#;re loving a good painted case piece.&#; Just like you shouldn&#;t feel bound to a style, don&#;t feel limited to a solid color, either. Keep an eye out for textured finishes or metallic accents to really add some dimension.

6. Cubism

Make room for squares because cubism is making a comeback this fall, with 20th century masterpieces earning spots alongside pieces by newcomers in bold, poppy palettes. &#;We&#;re seeing a return to this style of art, born in the early 20th century,&#; says Anna. &#;Today&#;s take on cubism is clearly influenced by the movement&#;s founders, the likes of Picasso and Dali, who sought to depict the natural through abstract, geometric shapes.&#;

7. Travertine

Thanks marble, you&#;ve served us well, but it&#;s time for a change and we&#;re eyeing cool, monochromatic travertine to fill the void. &#;It&#;s set in stone: we&#;re gaga for travertine!&#; says Anna. &#;Quietly minimalist but with gutsy brown, travertine is the decor trend to complete your space this upcoming season.&#; Utilize anything travertine, from a coffee table to bookends to bring a touch of the Coliseum chic to your home.

8. Scalloped Curves

News flash: we love curves in every shape and size! Anna says, &#;This fall it&#;s time to embrace curves! We&#;re particularly adoring scalloped seating and serpentine s-curves.&#; When shopping this fall decor trend, keep an eye out for those little-somethin&#; details like channel tufting or piping. In addition to making a scallop shape feel just a little more special, these details will make your piece feel more in sync with the budding maximalist trend.

9. Flamestitch + Missoni

&#;Bring on the chic zig zag with flamestitch!&#; says Anna of chevron&#;s lively (and surprisingly lesser-known) cousin. Perhaps made most famous by the design house Missoni, flamestitch feels both fresh and eclectic, making it a shoo-in for upholstery, pillows, and rugs. Part of what we love about flamestitch is that this fall decor trend that can be as subtle or as daring as you like (although as you know, we&#;ve never been one for subtlety). Look for monochrome flamestitch, similar to the cerulean one designer Summer Loftin used in her Atlanta carriage house above, for a more refined look, or choose a multi-color one in homage to true s splendor.

10. Secretary Desks

Secretary desks are seriously underrated, and according to Anna it&#;s high time they got their due! &#;These multitasking workstations are endlessly versatile and you can style one in virtually every room in the house,&#; she says. Put your best foot forward and keep the clutter at bay in this all-in-one desk (which moonlights as both a display case and storage cabinet like it&#;s no big thing). Many furniture designers have produced new versions of the secretary desk, though we&#;re still partial to an antique or vintage piece saddled with a bit more history.
