Conestoga Trailer

Type of flatbed trailer that provides the complete freight protection of a dry van trailer, but still is fork lift loadable from the sides. The freight protection is provided by an accordion like tarp covering system that creates a cover over the freight on the deck of the flatbed trailer. The term conestoga is a trademark of Aero Industries, Inc., however in trucking talk it will refer to this type of trailer. The term curtain side is also used interchangeably with conestoga.

Curtain Side Trailer

The curtain-side trailer has a roof, rear doors, front wall and resembles a dry van trailer, however the sides are heavy duty material curtains. This allows for loading from the side by fork lifts. Additionally the freight has the complete protection of a dry van trailer. Tautliner is a trademark of Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company, they manufacture curtain van trailers.

Corner Protectors

Any of the various devices ( generally L shaped or V) used to prevent damage to the edges and/or corners freight. Corner protectors are placed under the chains or straps used to secure freight to the deck of the flatbed trailer.

Dunnage

Generally this refers to any type of material used to prevent freight from shifting during transport. May also refer to utilizing wood to raise freight off of flatbed trailer deck so that a forklift may slide underneath to lift the freight, a common example being the 8 foot 2×4(s) under pipes.

TL (Truck Load)

Truck load is use of a flatbed trailer hauling a load or freight that is dedicated to one shipper. Freight or loads from other shippers will not be transported on that. This is also referred to as dedicated truck trailer.

Legal Loads

Generally legal dimensions will vary state by state, generally the dimensions are less than 8&#;6" wide, 13&#;6" high, and meeting the numerous overall (tractor and trailer) length requirements for specific states.

LTL (Less Than Truck Load)

Less than truckload is the use of only a portion of the flatbed trailer deck, so if a skid mounted generator that is 15 feet long and 7 feet wide is shipped on a trailer, there will be deck space available for other freight from other shippers. These partial loads can be combined with other loads, which equates to lower shipping costs for all shippers on that particular flatbed trailer.

Lowboy Trailers

Lowboy trailers, are used to haul freight that would require the need for permits on a standard height flatbed trailer. Generally the term refers to RGN type trailers, that have a well (same as deck) that is very low to the ground, thus tall freight may be loaded onto it.

Over-dimensional Loads

Loads that exceed the legal limits of: height, width, weight or length limits. See Permit Loads below.

Oversize Loads

Loads that exceed the legal limits of: height, width or length, for all roads the load is transported over. See Permit Loads below.

Partial Loads

See LTL above.

Permit Loads (Oversize/Overweight)

Also known as permitted loads. This is another term for an over dimensional load for which will require permits since it may be oversize or overweight. This means that the load will require a permit for all the states that are travelled through, these permits will restrict to times the load may be transported and also the routes the load may be transported over. There may be additional requirements such as pilot cars, bucket trucks, pole cars and police traffic supervision.

RGN (Removable Goose Neck Trailer)

Removable gooseneck trailers feature a front of the trailer mechanism that attaches the trailer to the tractors fifth wheel that is removable, so the trailer creates a ramp that wheeled or tracked machinery can drive onto.

Side-kit Trailers

A flatbed trailer that uses: panels, curved metal bow-shaped spines, and stakes affixed to the side-perimeter of the flatbed trailer, this creates an external structure that allows tarps to be placed over the structure. This creates a covered trailer that will protecting the freight, the same as a tarp would.

Tarp

A tarpaulin is a sheet or cover by definition, thus tarp is the shortened term. A tarp is a large cover made of heavy vinyl/polyester fabric that is used to cover flatbed, step deck and drop deck trailer loads. The key objective of traps is to protect the load or freight from rain, snow, grime and any elements of the road, tarps do not protect from heat or cold. The term "tarp" is also used as a verb to describe a driver covering the freight with a tarp or the need for the driver to do so.

V Boards

These are heavy cardboard, plastic or metal protectors designed to protect the freight from chaffing and damage from straps or chains used to secure the freight. These devices are also called: strap protectors, VEE boards, or tie down strap protectors, they provide an inexpensive way to protect the cargo, plus the straps or chains, and additionally any tarps or covers that come in contact with the corners and edges of the freight.

Another meaning is the use of a corner protection device made of 2 1×4 lumber boards fastened several inches apart by nylon straps. These types of v boards are put on the top edges of brick cubes in order to secure the bricks and prevent shifting o single bricks.

What is a Curtainside Trailer? [Definition, Pros and Cons of ...

Transportation is an industry full of equipment types. So many equipment types, in fact, that it can sometimes be difficult to understand the use-case of each.

Matching the right trailer to your load is important for facilitating your supply chain.

Yet doing so only gets more challenging with so many options in the mix.

Curtainside trailers are an example of this. This class of semi-trailers is designed for a specific purpose. And, when used correctly, curtainside trailers can become a sound transportation solution.

But what is a curtainside trailer? What are they used most commonly for? And what, if anything, are the limitations of this specialized trailer type?

If you&#;re looking to add additional trailer options to your logistics procedures, curtainsides may fit the bill. However, it&#;s important to have all of the right information before making any decisions.

So, let&#;s go over many of the key details you need to understand about curtainside trailers so you can decide, definitively, whether they will meet your company&#;s needs.

What is a Curtainside Trailer?

A curtainside trailer is a specialized semi-trailer that has a rigid framework mounted onto a flatbed or flat-deck trailer.

Curtainside trailers are comprised of a firmly bolstered front, which features an entry door, horizontal roof supports running the trailer&#;s length, a metal constructed roof (similar to a dry van&#;s), two swing-open rear doors and a sliding tarp system &#; typically made from an 18-ounce (or similar) material.

The tarps on either side of the curtainside trailer can be retracted for loading, sliding in a similar fashion as the tarps on a Conestoga trailer.

Not to be confused with a Conesoga (though they commonly are), curtainside trailers are different in a number of ways. Most notably, curtainsides only feature tarps on two sides (the left and right). Conestogas have a larger curtain system which creates its roof and rear as well.

Additionally, curtainside trailers feature a far more rigid framework than Conestogas do. The roof of a curtainside trailer is immobile and not retractable &#; the same cannot be said of Conestogas.

Curtainside trailers come in both 48 and 53-foot variations. Here is a list of the maximum cargo dimensions for this trailer type.

Maximum Cargo Dimensions For Curtainside Trailers

Maximum Cargo Width 8 feet, 4 inches (100") Maximum Cargo Height 8 feet (96") Maximum Cargo Length 48 and 53 feet Maximum Cargo Weight 40,000-43,000 pounds

Note: Maximum cargo dimensions will change based on the make and model of the trailer on your load. Always consult a trusted transportation provider for your exact trailer's dimensions.

How are Curtainside Trailers Commonly Used?

Curtainside trailers can be used for any freight that requires protection from the elements during transport &#; provided it can be loaded from the side or back.

Products that fit this mold include, but are not limited to, many palletized commodities, raw materials (such as lumber, steel and iron) and moisture-sensitive machinery.

Additionally, since these trailers provide such great protection, traditional dry van commodities like food and beverage freight, general retail goods and hospitality-industry items (to name a few) are also hauled in them.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using a Curtainside Trailer?

Like any other trailer type, curtainside trailers have a unique list of pros and cons users should be aware of. Compared to its closest alternative, the Conestoga trailer, curtainsides boast the following list of pros and cons:

Advantages of using a curtainside trailer over a Conestoga:

  • Better protection from the elements thanks to its tight seams and hard top.
  • The durability of an aluminum roof.

Disadvantages of using a curtainside trailer over a Conestoga:

  • Curtainsides are heavier, which makes it more challenging to move high-weight, full truckload volumes.
  • Due to their rigid framework, curtainside trailers can only be loaded from the sides via forklift or from the back. Loading using an overhead crane won&#;t be possible.

Looking For Protection From The Elements? Here&#;s Another Alternative!

Like Conestoga trailers, curtainsides are a relatively unique trailer type, making them difficult to find in some markets and driving up the cost of using one. Sure, curtainside trailers provide excellent protection from the elements and reduce instances of cargo damage during transit, but, in many situations, you simply don&#;t need one.

Tarping your open-deck freight will leave you with far more solutions to source from, cutting down the rates you pay in many instances.

That said, using tarps instead of one of these more specialized trailers will be a decision that is, once again, based on research.
