Most of the propane used in the U.S. is produced domestically. It is usually cheaper than gasoline and does not degrade performance. LPG-fueled vehicles can also emit lower amounts of some air pollutants and greenhouse gases, depending on vehicle type, calibration, and drive cycle.

The drawbacks to LPG are the limited number of fueling stations and vehicles. About 1,300 public fueling stations sell LPG in the US (see AFDC's Alternative Fueling Station Locator to find an LPG station near you). A few light-duty vehicles—mostly larger trucks and vans—can be ordered from a dealer with a prep-ready engine package and converted to use propane. Consumers can also convert in-use conventional vehicles for LPG use. Some LPG vehicles run on propane only. Others can switch between propane and a conventional fuel such as gasoline.

Propane is stored as a liquid in pressurized fuel tanks rated to 300 psi. So, LPG conversions consist of installing a separate fuel system (if the vehicle will use both conventional fuel and LPG) or a replacement fuel system (LPG-only operation).

Converting a vehicle to use LPG can cost $6,000 to $12,000. However, this cost may be recovered in lower fuel and maintenance costs.

Advantages and Disadvantages of LPG Advantages Disadvantages
  • 86% of propane used in the U.S. comes from domestic sources1
  • Cheaper than gasoline
  • Lower vehicle maintenance costs
  • Potentially lower toxic, carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) emissions
  • Limited vehicle availability
  • Limited number of fueling stations
  • Fewer miles on a tank of fuel
  • Converting a vehicle to use LPG is expensive

The Pros and Cons of Being an LPG Gas Agency Dealer

The Pros and Cons of Being an LPG Gas Agency Dealer

From residences to commercial and industrial spaces, Liquefied Petroleum Gas has become a highly reliable fuel source. Thanks to its accessibility, and affordability, LPG has quickly become a choice fuel across industries. Following the market demand, several new dealerships for LPG gas agencies have also come into existence.

The role of a gas agency dealer is crucial in the supply chain of LPG cylinders. That means a dealer acts as an intermediary between the gas company and consumers— ensuring the smooth distribution of essential fuel to households and businesses. So, if you are planning to get into the business, it’s best to familiarise yourself with the pros and cons of a gas agency dealership.

Pros of Being a Gas Agency Dealer

  • Lucrative Business Opportunity

The LPG market in India in FY2021 stood at 30.6 million tonnes and is expected to grow to 36.9 million tonnes by FY2030. This is a clear indicator of a significant growth in demand in the upcoming years. Hence, in such a scenario, operating a gas agency dealership can be a highly profitable venture. Plus, LPG has penetrated into the rural sectors too, with further adds to the consistency of a huge market in India. Furthermore, the commission structure provided by gas companies often ensures a good return on investment, thereby, making it an attractive business opportunity.

  • Steady Customer Base

India recorded over 305 million active LPG customers in FY2022 according to reports. This was a major jump from 289.5 million in FY2021 which further shows the increasing customer base. So, as a gas agency dealer, you will have a stable customer base as LPG is an essential household and commercial fuel. People rely on LPG for cooking, heating, and other purposes, creating a consistent demand throughout the year, which paves the way for a recurrent source of income. This stability and reliability ensure a regular income stream, reducing the risks associated with seasonal fluctuations.

  • Government Support and Incentives

Liquefied Petroleum Gas is a clean fuel that burns with no smoke. This makes LPG a clean and sustainable energy source and hence the Indian Government(s) recognise its importance. Several schemes and policies adopted by the Government to promote clean and efficient cooking practices, act as added support. In addition, they often provide various subsidies and incentives to gas agency dealers. These benefits can include reduced prices for cylinders, financial assistance for infrastructure development, and ease of licensing and regulatory processes.

  • Expansion Opportunities

As mentioned earlier, the market for LPG is growing. If your gas agency dealership is running successfully, you can expand your business further to generate more revenue. For instance, you can expand the geographical location that you currently cater to and even add related services. Many successful dealers diversify into related ventures such as gas stove sales, kitchen appliances, or gas pipeline installation. This flexibility allows dealers to tap into additional revenue streams and maximise their business potential.

  • Flexibility in Operations

Having a gas agency dealership offers the flexibility of operating according to the convenience of you and your staff. There are no specific business timings as well as operating hours set beforehand. An LPG agency dealership can operate according to their preferences and local market conditions. This further opens up the opportunity for you to work on other ventures that you may have. Flexibility can offer perks to the staff who can choose their working hours, and delivery routes, and even customise to specific customer needs. This level of flexibility allows for a better work-life balance and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Community Connection

LPG gas dealerships function and operate within a particular region. When you cater to a defined group of customers, you naturally build relationships with your local community. Hence, as a gas agency dealer, you become an integral part of the local community. By providing a necessary resource (LPG), you build a strong rapport with customers and establish long-term relationships. This sense of community connection can contribute to a positive brand image and word-of-mouth referrals, enhancing the growth and sustainability of your business. Plus, if you have other businesses, they develop into potential customers too.

Cons of Being a Gas Agency Dealer

  • Initial Investment and Infrastructure

To get started with a gas agency dealership, you will have to invest a significant amount into the business upfront. In addition, you may also have to procure storage facilities, vehicles for transportation, safety equipment, and other necessary infrastructure. Apart from these, there are licensing fees and legal requirements that must be fulfilled. While these may seem like hefty amounts, these are necessarily an investment into your business which is likely to yield great returns.

  • Safety and Compliance Regulations

One of the major challenges of becoming a gas agency dealer is the handling and safe distribution of LPG cylinders. Since LPGs are commodities that need to be handled with utmost safety, due to the involvement of inherent risks. As a gas agency dealer, you will need to take steps to strictly adhere to safety protocols, maintain proper storage conditions, and ensure that your staff is well-trained in handling emergencies. Simply streamlining the operational and safety regulations, you can ensure that your dealership has the best market reputation.

  • Supply and Inventory Management

Crucial for running any business, you must effectively maintain the logistics and operations efficiently. Your gas agency dealership can become highly successful when you effectively manage customer demands. Besides, you also must effectively manage the inventory to avoid stockouts or overstocking. Proper forecasting and coordination with a reliable gas company are essential to overcome these challenges.

  • Market Competition

With the surge in demand for LPG cylinders across sectors, the dealership field has become highly competitive. Depending on your location, you may experience competition from your neighbouring dealerships to occupy the same customer base. However, to make your gas agency dealership stand out, you can provide exceptional services, competitive pricing, and value-added offerings, that may include doorstep delivery or prompt customer support.

Running an LPG gas agency dealership can be a lucrative business opportunity, considering the rising demands and the other peaks listed above, it does not come without challenges.
